| The first evidence of the human presence in the territories
included between the Pizzorne and Monti Pisani dates back to
150.000 years ago. During the Iron Age (IX-VIII century b.C.)
many small villages developed along the Auser and during the
V century b.C. they acquired a great importance thanks to the
increasing of the trade between Etruria and Valle del Po. Around
180 b.C. about 3000 people settled in Lucca, which became a
Latin colony and during the Augustan Age and the I century
A.D. the territory had a period of big prosperity. |

In the last centuries of the Empire
and with the Barbarian invasions of the V century A.D.
the small property suffered a decline which was solved
with the redistribution of the land by the Sovereign
of the Ostrogoths, Teodorico, and around 500 the country
became florid again.
The Longobard were attracted by the country of Capannori and this population
introduced the denomination of "borgo", which is still present in the
territory.
During the feudal period a closed economy developed which was mainly based on
the barter which was called "curtense".
In the XII and XIII centuries there was a big demographic expansion, above all
on the hills.

| During the battles between Florence and Lucca, Capannori
was defeated by Florence and the inundation of the Serchio
(once called Auser), the famine and the pestilence caused a
big decrease of the agricultural production. |

In the second half of the XV century
there was a big recovery as it results from the church
archives of the main towns that had good incomes in that
period.
In this period numerous brotherhoods developed that contributed to establish
deep bonds between the population and the church.
In 1801 the Vicaries were grouped in the three Cantoni called of the Serchio,
of the Litorale and of the Appennini and in 1819 the territory of Capannori was
reduced and thus remained until the beginning of the twentieth century, when
a project was elaborated that foresaw the division of the territory into four
parts.
The proposal caused many disputes but in 1913 Porcari detached from Capannori
and became an independent municipality.
The final structure was reached in 1925 with the detachment of the fraction of
Badia Pozzeveri given to the municipality of Altopascio. |
