The Church of the Angel, Puccini Museum in Celle

The long route of the Media Valle of river Serchio and of Garfagnana starts with the visit of the Monastery of the Angel (8th century), which lies between Vinchiana and Tramonte. To reach it we have to take the diversion on the way to S. Gemignano. The Monastery was built by Anselmo da Baggio in the 11th century.

At the beginning of 15th century the church belonged to the Benedictine monks. In that period Priamo della Quercia was charged with the restoration works of the interior. Afterwards Carlo Ludovico entrusted the reconstruction of the building to Lorenzo Nottolini (both inside and outside). In the nearby town of Celle was born the ancestor of Giacomo Puccini, who was named after him. Also the composer, as a child, spent here his holidays together with his brothers. In the many letters, written by Giacomo Puccini to Ramelde (one of his relatives), the name of Celle often recurred.

Its inhabitants organized even a party for the composer before he left to Brussels. In 1976 the house of Puccini's forefathers was turned into a museum. Here the precious heirlooms of the composer, given by Alba Franceschini and other heirs, are still kept with great care.

Among these we can admire the bed, where the artist was born, the crown, given to Puccini after the great success of "Le Villi", some photos, a piano "Heyel Borna- Leipzig" of 1828 (used to compose part of "Madama Butterfly"), the phonograph given to the composer by Thomas Edison, a lot of letters and music scores. On the first floor there are the living-room and the bedroom (with the same furnishings of that time) and on the second floor there are the personal belongings and heirlooms of Puccini's forefathers.
