Villetta e Camporgiano

Going uphill from Castelnuovo and following the road climbing along the valley of the river Serchio, we arrive at Villetta. This town is famous for the highest stone railway bridge in Europe, which gets over the river just at a short distance from the church of Sambuca.

This is a town, part of the municipality of S. Romano Garfagnana, where we can find the beautiful church of S. Pantaleone, recently renovated, standing on a rocky spur that can be reached only from a steep road. This church, originally built by the Longobards, was rebuilt in 1460 with subsequent interventions in 1604. Lately the "Fondazione Ricci", together with the villagers of Sambuca and the municipal government, has provided financial support for the renovation of both the interior and exterior of the church.

Admirable is also the 15th century fortress (Rocca), with its rounded embattled towers, standing in the centre of Camporgiano. The Rocca, surrounded by mighty walls, was built on a cliff over the river Serchio.

Inside the fortress we can find a museum of Renaissance ceramics. The museum is in the central embattled tower of the Rocca Estense. A visit should be paid to the beautiful collection of Renaissance majolicaware. Finally we'd like to mention two more towns: Sillano (rising at the fountainhead of the river Serchio) and Piazza al Serchio (standing right at the point where the roads connecting Garfagnana, Emilia and Lunigiana join).

Originally Sillano was under the rule of the Malaspina family and of the nobles from Doraio; later of Lucca (till 1446). Finally Leonello d'Este from Ferrara kept it under his control.
Piazza al Serchio was inhabited by the Apuan Ligurians, then by the Roman colonists (II century BC), and then by the Longobards. Not to be missed are also the ancient town Pieve di Castello and some old villages (such as Livignano, Borsigliana, Petrognano and Malaspina di San Michele, the castle in Nicciano, Castelvecchio and the castle in Gragnana).
