Massaciuccoli and Torre del Lago

The territory of Versilia starts just beyond the Monte Quiesa from the municipality of Massarosa, where we find the Lake of Massaciuccoli, made up of the rests of a lagoon shaped by the river Serchio and two meters deep.

The two very important little towns of Massaciuccoli and Torre del Lago stand on the shores of this lake. In Massaciuccoli there are the ruins of Roman baths, called "Buche di Nerone" and of a Roman villa.
This ruins (a mosaic flooring and some manufactured products) bear witness to the interest of the Roman aristocracy towards this places.

Torre del Lago is well-known for its relationship with Giacomo Puccini, the great composer from Lucca, who spent here a long time of his life.

Today in the villa where he lived, we find a museum dedicated to him.
Torre del Lago symbolizes a very important period in the life of the composer, who drew inspiration for the composition of his most renowned operas right on the shores of the lake (where he loved going hunting).
After the success of "Manon Lescaut", Puccini moved to the residence of the count Grottanelli, where he remained until the end of the works due to the construction of "Villa Puccini".

It was accomplished in the spring of 1900.
In the villa, in front of which there is a monument depicting the composer, it is possible to visit the living-room, the study, the dining-room, the reception room, the piano Föster and the worktable, some manuscripts and documents, hunting trophies, weapons and the living-room turned into a chapel.
All year in summer (starting from 1930) the opera season in the open air (called "Pucciniana") takes place on the shores of the lake in front of Villa Puccini.
The first opera was indeed performed here in 1930.
Thanks to Giovacchino forzano, willing to make a wish of Puccini himself come true, "La Bohème" was performed with Pietro Mascagni conducting.
