Campocatino and Vagli di Sotto

Speaking about Garfagnana it's impossible not to mention Campocatino, an early hollow dominating the valley, not too far from which we can visit the ancient rocky hermitage of S. Viviano.

The most enchanting sight in this resort is undoubtedly the basin of Vagli, which every ten years is drained for maintenance works, bringing to light by magic the ghostly ruins of the old village of Fabbriche.
The municipality of Vagli lies in the middle of the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuane (the Natural Park of the Alpi Apuane).

Campocatino, Old hut

It has been for some time a very fascinating resort for tourists, who crowded here to visit the lake. Actually it is one of the biggest drainage basin in Europe. Nature-lovers can find here enchanting marble mountains, green woods and pasture lands, the walls of Monte Roccandagia, the karst chasms of the glacial hollow of Arnetola and the so-called Marmitte dei Giganti (the Potholes).
After the arrival of the Roman legions the village became a shelter for the Ligurian-… tribes, which were linked to the Etruscan civilization. Some funds, brought to light by recent archaeological excavations, bear witness to the relations among these people.

Campocatino

After the Vaglini family regain its freedom from the local rules round about 1000, they divided their land into three resorts: Vagli di Sotto (lower part), Vagli di Sopra (upper part) and Roggio. The territory of Vagli di Sotto took its current layout in 1929, when the hamlet of Arni was annexed to the municipality of Stazzema. In 1953, after the construction of the Vagli dam was accomplished, the valley of Edron stream was turned into a hydroelectric basin and the village of Fabbriche di Careggine disappeared under the waters.
