| The most important events in Versilia are the well- known
Versilia Festival in Marina di Pietrasanta and the Puccini Festival
in Torre del Lago, both held in summer. In winter, there are
large-scale events, with the magnificent Viareggio Carnival
holding pride of place. |

THE CARNIVAL
The Carnival in Viareggio is the most popular in Italy.
Originally a pagan festival, in modern times Carnival
has been conveniently grafted onto the last 5 to 10
days before Ash Wednesday, which on the Christian calendar
signals the start of the sober Lenten period.
A colorful and sophisticated parade of mechanized floats
subtly lampooning political figures and celebrities
along the famous "Passeggiata", Viareggio's
elegant promenade with smart bathing establishments
on the seaside and art nouveau style and advanced buildings
on the other side. |

Side events during the Carnival period: movies, art exhibitions,
sporting events, conferences and local celebrations.
Martedi Grasso is Fat Tuesday, the final day of Carnevale
before Lent: the best of the fest is saved for this time,
with parades and fireworks.

DEL LAGO
In summer, between July and August, Puccini Festival takes
place in Torre del Lago Puccini in the open-air Theatre:
since 1930, first in a temporary theatre built on piles,
then in the so-called ‘Theatre of Four Thousand's,
there has been a succession of more than forty Puccini
Festivals, justo to realise a wish expressed by Puccini
himself: "...I always come out here and then go hunting
snipe in a boat ....But one day I’d like to come
out here and listen to one of my operas in the open air...".
